The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet — God contains and encompasses all things. He is the origin of everything that exists and the final destination toward which all of history moves. Nothing precedes him, nothing follows him, nothing exists outside the span he defines. A statement of absolute divine sovereignty over the entire created order and all of history. The rabbis taught that "God's seal is emet (truth, אֱמֶת)" — aleph-mem-tav, spanning the first, middle, and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The same title is given to Christ in Revelation 22:13.
