christological significance
Anticipates the Incarnation
Intelligence Brief
On the throne sits one with 'the appearance of a man.' This is not an angel or a symbol but the visible manifestation of Yahweh himself. The same figure appears in Daniel 7:13 as 'one like a son of man' approaching the Ancient of Days. Ezekiel sees what the Incarnation will make permanent: God in human form. The One on the throne has a waist, an upper body, a lower body — human anatomy wrapped in fire and glory. This is the God who will become flesh in Jesus Christ, the exact image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15), the radiance of his glory (Hebrews 1:3).
