Intelligence Brief
Every soldier in Israel ran the same calculation: our strength vs. his strength. The answer came up short every time, for 40 days. David ran a different calculation. His first recorded question in the battle account is not "how do we kill him?" but "who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" (17:26). This is not bravado — it's a classification problem. David classified the force in the field differently than everyone else. If the army is Israel's, the match is Israel's strength against Goliath's strength. If the army is God's, the match is Goliath's strength against God's strength. Same valley. Same giant. Entirely different tactical picture. David's declaration in 17:45-47 is the full mission statement: this engagement is a demonstration, not just a battle — "that all the earth may know there is a God in Israel."
