Distinction
Not misthios (hired) — doulos has no wages, no contract, no exit
Intelligence Brief
A doulos — a slave with unconditional allegiance, no independent legal rights, and no competing loyalties. In the Roman world this was the lowest social rank. In Scripture it becomes a title of honor: Moses, Joshua, David, Paul, James, Peter, and Jude all use it of themselves. Total ownership by the master is the point, not degradation. GK: doulos (δοῦλος) — owned person, slave. Distinguished from misthios (hired servant) — a doulos has no wages, no contract, no exit. The honor comes not from the status but from the identity of the master. SCIF: Oath-bound operative — all personal rights, independent initiative, and competing loyalties permanently surrendered to the commanding authority.
