Intelligence Brief

Bible Dictionary: Cherubim (Hebrew plural of 'keruv') are not the chubby infants of Renaissance art. They are powerful, composite beings — part human, part animal, part bird — who guard sacred space. They first appear guarding Eden (Genesis 3:24) and are woven into the tabernacle and temple architecture. Historical Context: Golden cherubim overshadowed the ark in the Most Holy Place (Exodus 25:18-22). God was said to be 'enthroned between the cherubim' (1 Samuel 4:4, Psalm 80:1). Ezekiel sees the living reality behind the golden statues — the actual throne-bearers of God, now carrying His presence out of the temple. Scarlet Thread: The cherubim who barred Eden's entrance are the same class of beings who carry God's throne. What they guard, Christ opens. The way to the tree of life, blocked by cherubim and flaming sword, is reopened through Christ's death — the veil (embroidered with cherubim, Exodus 26:31) is torn, and access is restored.
