History
Sardis fell twice through unguarded positions
Intelligence Brief
Christ warns Sardis: if they do not wake up, He will come like a thief — unexpectedly, at an unguarded moment. The thief metaphor is used consistently in the NT for Christ's sudden arrival in judgment (Matt 24:43-44; 1 Thess 5:2; 2 Pet 3:10). Particularly cutting for Sardis, whose citadel fell twice to enemies climbing unguarded approaches while defenders slept. Christ comes like a thief only to the spiritually asleep; to the watchful, He comes as the welcomed Lord (1 Thess 5:4). GK: hēxō hōs kleptēs; grēgoreō = wake up, be vigilant. HEB: shaqad (שָׁקַד). SCIF: Unannounced inspection — not enemy raid but surprise inspection by legitimate authority targeting units that abandoned their watch.
