History
Sardis fell twice to surprise attack while defenders slept
Intelligence Brief
Christ's blunt assessment of Sardis: "You have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead." Spiritual death — external forms and reputation of vitality with no actual spiritual life. Sardis was famous for its impregnable acropolis yet conquered twice (Cyrus 546 BC, Antiochus III 214 BC) because defenders fell asleep. The church mirrors the city: complacent, resting on reputation. Christ does not say they are dying — they are dead. GK: nekros (νεκρός); onoma echeis hoti zēs — "you have a name/reputation that you are alive." HEB: met (מֵת). SCIF: Unit assessed non-operational despite active status designation — all external indicators suggest functioning; Commander's assessment: no vital signs.
