The Greek 'ouk epheisato' means did not spare, did not hold back. The language echoes Genesis 22:16 where God says to Abraham, 'you have not withheld your son, your only son.' Abraham was willing; God actually did it. The argument is from greater to lesser: if God gave the greatest gift (his Son), will he withhold lesser gifts? Impossible. The scarlet thread is explicit: the cross is the proof of God's commitment. The Father's love is measured by what it cost him. He 'delivered him up for us all' — the same verb used for Judas's betrayal and Pilate's handing over. God handed over his Son to death for us.
