Bible Dictionary: 'Raqia' (רָקִיעַ) comes from a root meaning to beat out or spread thin (like hammering metal). It refers to the expanse of the sky, understood in ancient cosmology as a solid dome holding back the waters above. Rain comes through windows in the raqia (Genesis 7:11). The term describes the sky as perceived, not as scientifically analyzed. Historical Context: Ancient Near Eastern cosmology pictured a three-tiered universe: waters above the dome, the habitable world, waters below (tehom). Genesis uses this framework without endorsing it as physics — the point is theological: God orders all realms, above and below. The raqia is where God places the luminaries and where birds fly.
