The Hebrew raqia is the same word used for the firmament in Genesis 1:6-8 — the solid dome separating waters above from waters below. Here it appears as a crystal platform above the cherubim, beneath the throne. The 'awesome crystal' (qerach nora) suggests ice or glass of terrifying brilliance. This is the floor of heaven, the barrier between the creaturely realm and the divine throne. Revelation 4:6 describes 'a sea of glass, like crystal' before the throne — the same image of terrible, beautiful separation between Creator and creation.
