Bible Dictionary: The Hebrew 'raqia' — the same word used for the firmament in Genesis 1:6. Here it appears as a solid, crystal-like platform stretched above the cherubim, supporting the throne of God. This is the floor of heaven's throne room, visible from below. Historical Context: In ancient Near Eastern cosmology, the firmament was the boundary between earthly and heavenly realms. Ezekiel sees this boundary opened — the ceiling of earth becomes the floor of God's throne. The expanse is not empty sky but load-bearing architecture for divine presence.
