The original, consuming devotion to Christ that characterized the Ephesian believers at conversion — not merely emotional warmth but the wholehearted priority of Christ above all competing loyalties. The Ephesians had sound doctrine, perseverance, and discernment but had allowed these very things to replace the person they were meant to serve. Orthodoxy without devotion is functional apostasy. GK: agapē prōtē (ἀγάπη πρώτη) — first love, primary devotion. agapē = self-giving, covenantal love. prōtē = first in rank, priority. HEB: ahavah (אַהֲבָה) — the covenant love of Deuteronomy 6:5. SCIF: Primary mission loyalty — the original, unconditional allegiance to Supreme Command that preceded all subsequent operational competence. Competence without loyalty is insubordination with good paperwork.
