Intelligence Brief
'Firstborn' (prototokos) is a title of rank, not a statement of origin. In ancient Near Eastern culture, the firstborn received the double portion, the authority, the family leadership — regardless of birth order (Jacob over Esau, Ephraim over Manasseh, David as youngest). Psalm 89:27 applies 'firstborn' to David's heir: 'I will make him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.' Paul immediately clarifies: Christ is firstborn OVER creation because BY Him all things were created (v.16). He is not part of creation but its source. The Colossian heresy may have placed Christ as the first and highest created being. Paul demolishes this: He is before all things, creator of all things, sustainer of all things. Firstborn means supreme, not sequential.
