Intelligence Brief

The four faces are not random. They represent the apex of each category of earthly life: human (rational creation), lion (wild beasts), ox (domestic animals), eagle (birds). Together they signify that all creation — in its highest expressions — attends the divine throne. Early church tradition associated these faces with the four Gospels: Matthew (human/king), Mark (lion/servant), Luke (ox/sacrifice), John (eagle/divine). Whether or not that typology holds, the theological point is clear: the God who rides this chariot is Lord of all living things.
