Christ has permanently freed believers from the guilt, condemnation, and power of sin — not by waiving the penalty but by bearing it in full as their substitute. This is Penal Substitutionary Atonement: God's justice required that the full penalty for sin be executed. That penalty — the complete outpouring of divine wrath — was transferred to Christ, who bore it entirely in the place of the guilty. The blood signifies the poured-out life of the covenant sacrifice, satisfying divine justice completely. The debt is not forgiven in the sense of being overlooked — it is paid to the last degree by a willing and qualified substitute. Only because justice was fully satisfied can God be simultaneously just and the justifier (Romans 3:26). This is propitiation — the turning away of wrath through the satisfaction of justice, not its suspension. Tetelestai (John 19:30) — "it is finished," a commercial term meaning "paid in full." SCIF: Full penalty executed on authorized substitute — divine justice cannot be suspended, reduced, or administratively bypassed.
