Intelligence Brief
The Hebrew hashmal appears only in Ezekiel and defies precise translation. Ancient versions rendered it as 'electrum' (gold-silver alloy) or 'amber.' Modern scholars suggest bronze at the point of melting — metal so hot it glows. Whatever the precise referent, the function is clear: this is the visible radiance of God's presence, the light that emanates from the throne. It appears at the center of the storm-cloud and again surrounding the figure on the throne (v. 27). This is what glory looks like when it takes visible form.
