Intelligence Brief

Paul clarifies his statement: 'in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing.' He is not saying he is totally worthless but locating the problem precisely. The 'flesh' (sarx) is the sin nature, the old Adam, the unregenerate aspect that remains even in believers. In that sector of his being, there is no good — no capacity for righteousness, no resource for obedience. The desire for good is present (v.18b), but the flesh cannot produce it. This is why self-improvement fails: you cannot draw water from an empty well. The scarlet thread: this is why the incarnation was necessary. Christ took on flesh but without sin (Romans 8:3). He is the only human in whom flesh and goodness coexisted. His flesh was the sacrifice; his righteousness is the gift.
