Intelligence Brief
The language echoes Israel's inheritance of Canaan — the promised land divided among the tribes. But Paul universalizes it: Gentile believers are now 'fit' (qualified, made sufficient) to share in this inheritance. The qualification is not earned but conferred — God 'made us fit.' The inheritance is 'in light' — the realm of God's presence, contrasted with the 'power of darkness' in the next verse. This is transfer of citizenship: once outsiders to the covenants of promise, now full heirs alongside Israel. The Colossian heresy suggested additional qualifications were needed — ascetic practices, angel veneration, special knowledge. Paul insists: the Father has already qualified you. The paperwork is complete.
