In the ancient world, keys signified authority — the right to open and close, to admit and exclude. To hold the keys of Death and Hades is to hold authority over the final domain. Revelation 20:14 will show Death and Hades being thrown into the lake of fire — they are not permanent features. They are temporary holding areas. The one with the keys determines who exits, when, and to where. This is the credential attached to the voice that tells John not to be afraid.
