Bible Dictionary: The Hebrew 'yehi or' (יְהִי אוֹר) is a jussive command — 'Let light be!' God does not manipulate pre-existing material; He speaks and reality conforms. This is creation ex nihilo by divine fiat. The word carries its own power; the command is the cause. Historical Context: Pagan cosmogonies required gods to struggle, fight, or craft. YHWH speaks. The effortlessness is the point — creation is not labor for God but overflow of His will. The repeated 'and it was so' emphasizes the absolute correspondence between divine word and cosmic reality. Scarlet Thread: John identifies Jesus as the Word (Logos) through whom all things were made (John 1:3). Paul explicitly connects creation's light-command to salvation: 'God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ' (2 Corinthians 4:6). The same voice that commanded light commands spiritual sight.
