Intelligence Brief
Above the crystal expanse, above the cherubim, sits the throne. Ezekiel is careful with his language — 'likeness of a throne,' 'appearance of sapphire' — because he is describing what cannot fully be described. But the theological point is unmistakable: there is a throne, and someone sits on it. God is not an abstract force but a ruling King. Isaiah saw this throne (Isaiah 6:1). John saw it (Revelation 4:2). Jesus promised his followers would sit with him on his throne (Revelation 3:21). The throne is the center of the universe, and everything Ezekiel sees radiates from it.
