Bible Dictionary: Elyon means 'highest' or 'most high.' It emphasizes God's absolute supremacy over all other powers — heavenly or earthly. When paired with 'El' (God), it becomes 'El Elyon' — God Most High, the title Melchizedek used (Genesis 14:18-20). It asserts that no authority exists above Yahweh. Historical Context: In a polytheistic world where nations claimed their gods were supreme, 'Most High' was a polemical title. Babylon thought Marduk was supreme; Egypt claimed Ra. Israel declared Yahweh alone is Elyon — the God above all gods, the King above all kings. Even in exile under Babylon's power, Yahweh remained Most High. Scarlet Thread: Jesus is given 'the name that is above every name' (Philippians 2:9). He is seated 'far above all rule and authority and power and dominion' (Ephesians 1:21).
