Bible Dictionary: 'Mysterion' in Paul does not mean 'mysterious' but 'previously hidden, now revealed.' The specific mystery of Ephesians is stated in 3:6: 'the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.' This was not guessed, not discovered — it was revealed. Paul is its herald. Historical Context: Mystery religions in the Greco-Roman world guarded secrets for initiates only. Paul inverts this: the Christian mystery is revealed, proclaimed, shouted from rooftops. It was hidden in God's plan, foreshadowed in the prophets, but not clearly understood until Christ came and the Spirit illuminated it. Now it must be made known 'with boldness.' Scarlet Thread: Christ IS the mystery — 'the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge' (Colossians 2:2-3). The mystery is not an idea but a Person. Paul's boldness is to proclaim that the crucified Jewish Messiah is Lord of all nations, and all who trust Him — Jew or Gentile — are one body.
