Intelligence Brief

The new moon (Hebrew 'chodesh') and Sabbath were mandated rest periods when commercial activity ceased. New moon festivals marked the beginning of each month with sacrifices and celebration. The Sabbath was weekly. God's accusation exposes the merchants' hearts: they observe the letter of the law while despising its spirit. They sit through worship calculating how soon they can reopen the stalls. Their bodies are in the temple; their hearts are in the marketplace. The scarlet thread: Jesus confronted identical corruption — Sabbath reduced to legalism while hearts remained far from God. He declared Himself Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28), the one who fulfills what the day pointed toward: true rest in Him.
