apolytrōsis tou sōmatos
Intelligence Brief
The Greek 'apolytrōsis tou sōmatos' means redemption/liberation of the body. Salvation is not escape from the body (Gnostic error) but redemption of it. We groan now because we have the Spirit but still inhabit mortal, decaying bodies. The 'adoption' we await (v. 23) is the public declaration of sonship at the resurrection — when our bodies are transformed to match our legal status. The scarlet thread: Christ's resurrection body is the prototype. He was raised bodily, glorified, imperishable. 'We shall be like him' (1 John 3:2). The redemption of our bodies is the final act of the drama that began at the cross.
