Intelligence Brief

Baal was the Canaanite storm god whose worship had infiltrated Israel for centuries. Elijah confronted it. Jehu massacred its priests. Hezekiah and Josiah tore down its altars. Yet here, generations later, a 'remnant' still exists in Jerusalem itself. The word 'remnant' (she'ar) is usually positive in prophetic literature — the faithful survivors. Here it is inverted: the remnant of Baal, the survivors of the enemy cult, still embedded in the holy city. God promises to cut off even the memory of their name.
