Intelligence Brief

Saul's solution to the Goliath problem was institutional: better armor, better weapons, standard kit. Bronze helmet, coat of mail, sword — the full complement of conventional warfare. The problem was not the equipment. The problem was that David had never tested it. The armor was sized for Saul (the tallest man in Israel, head and shoulders above everyone else). David tried to walk and couldn't. He stripped it off. This decision gets read as humility or naivety, but it was neither — it was operator discipline. He refused to enter a lethal engagement with untested equipment in an unfamiliar kit. He went back to what he had field-tested: a staff, a sling, five smooth stones. The shepherd's kit was his actual weapons system.
