Intelligence Brief

Bible Dictionary: The 'thureos' was the large, door-shaped Roman shield (4 feet tall, 2.5 feet wide) — distinct from the smaller round shield. It was leather-covered and could be soaked in water to extinguish flaming projectiles. 'Faith' (pistis) here is active trust in God's promises and character — the shield is raised, not passive. It 'quenches' (sbennumi — extinguishes completely) the enemy's attacks. Historical Context: Flaming arrows were terror weapons — they burned, they spread fire, they caused panic. The thureos was specifically designed to counter them. Paul's readers knew this technology. Faith functions identically: the enemy launches accusations, doubts, fears, temptations — burning missiles designed to ignite and spread. Faith in God's word extinguishes them before they penetrate. Scarlet Thread: Christ is 'the author and perfecter of faith' (Hebrews 12:2). Abraham believed God and it was credited as righteousness (Romans 4:3). The shield is trust in the God who promised, who delivered, who raised Jesus from the dead. Every fiery dart meets the reality of the resurrection and is extinguished.
