pneuma douleias
characteristic
fear — relating to God as threatening master
Intelligence Brief
The Greek 'pneuma douleias' — spirit of slavery — describes the old condition: relating to God as a slave fears a master, never secure, always anxious about performance. This was the experience under the law without the gospel: knowing God's demands, unable to meet them, living in fear of judgment. The contrast is total: believers did not receive this spirit 'again' — they have moved from slavery to sonship. The scarlet thread: Christ redeemed those under the law 'so that we might receive adoption as sons' (Gal 4:5). The Spirit is the agent of this new status, crying 'Abba' through us.
