Intelligence Brief

The Greek 'sarx' in Paul carries theological weight beyond its literal meaning of 'meat' or 'body.' Here it denotes the unregenerate human condition — the self curved in on itself, hostile to God, incapable of pleasing him (v. 7-8). It is not that bodies are evil (Gnostic error) but that the whole person without the Spirit operates from a corrupted base code. The flesh is the Adamic inheritance — what we are 'in Adam' before we are 'in Christ.' The scarlet thread: Christ came 'in the likeness of sinful flesh' (v. 3) — he took on human nature without its corruption, condemned sin in that very arena, and broke its power.
