The sling was a legitimate military weapon in the ancient Near East — Judges 20:16 documents 700 Benjaminite slingers who could hit a hair without missing. An experienced slinger achieves lethal velocity at 100-200 meters — well outside the effective range of any sword, spear, or javelin in Goliath's kit. Goliath had a sword, a spear, and a javelin. All three required close-quarters engagement. David had a sling. It did not. When David ran toward Goliath, he was not charging recklessly — he was closing to optimal sling range while remaining entirely outside Goliath's engagement envelope. Goliath's armor was irrelevant. Goliath's size was irrelevant. He never got within operational range of any weapon he was carrying.
