Bible Dictionary: 'Methodeia' (from meta + hodos = 'following a path') means a deliberate method, a crafty scheme, a calculated strategy. It appears only here and in Ephesians 4:14 (deceitful scheming). The devil does not attack randomly — he employs tested tactics, exploits known weaknesses, and follows patterns. The plural 'wiles' indicates multiple, varied stratagems. Historical Context: Ancient warfare valued cunning as much as strength — the Trojan Horse, ambushes, feigned retreats. Paul warns that spiritual warfare follows the same logic: the enemy studies his targets, times his attacks, and disguises his approaches. The armor is needed precisely because the attacks are sophisticated, not crude. Scarlet Thread: Satan's methods are consistent from Eden onward: questioning God's word ('Did God really say?'), promising godlikeness, exploiting legitimate desires illegitimately. Christ faced these same methodeia in the wilderness (Matthew 4) and defeated them with Scripture — the sword of the Spirit.
