Intelligence Brief

The imagery is shocking: Yahweh as host of a sacrificial feast, but the sacrifice is his own people, and the guests are the pagan nations he has 'consecrated' (set apart) to consume them. The Hebrew zebach typically means a peace offering where worshippers eat the sacrifice. Here the roles are inverted — Judah is the meat, Babylon is the guest. This is covenant curse language from Deuteronomy 28 made visceral. The scarlet thread is severe: there is a sacrifice that absorbs divine wrath. For Judah in 586 BC, they were the sacrifice. For us, Christ became the sacrifice — the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
