BOOK DOSSIER: HEBREWS
Testament: NT | Chapters: 13 | Status: 0% DECLASSIFIED
Thirteen chapters of the most sophisticated Christological argument in the New Testament — a sermon-letter written to Jewish believers tempted to revert to Judaism under persecution. The unknown author's thesis: Jesus is better. Better than angels (1-2), better than Moses (3-4), better than Aaron (5-7), mediator of a better covenant (8-10), and the pioneer of a better faith (11-12). The Melchizedek priesthood argument in chapters 5-7 is the most complex typological reasoning in Scripture. Chapter 11 is the faith hall of fame — Abel to the unnamed martyrs. Chapter 12 delivers the warning: 'Do not refuse him who is speaking.' The entire Old Testament was a trailer. Hebrews is the review that says the feature film has arrived.
Scarlet Thread
Hebrews 9:12 — 'He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.' Every high priest entered the facility annually with borrowed blood — and annually it was insufficient. כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל entered once with His own. The calendar stopped.
