BOOK DOSSIER: JONAH
Testament: OT | Chapters: 4 | Status: 100% DECLASSIFIED
Four chapters of the only prophet who ran the opposite direction from his assignment. JONAH gets ordered to Nineveh — the capital of Israel's worst enemy — and books a ship to Tarshish. God sends a storm, the pagan sailors show more theological sense than the prophet, and a great fish executes a three-day containment protocol. Jonah preaches eight words in Nineveh, the entire city repents, and Jonah is furious about it. He wanted judgment, not mercy. God's final question — about a plant, a worm, and 120,000 people — goes unanswered. The book ends without a resolution because the reader is supposed to answer.
Scarlet Thread
Jonah 1:17 — 'Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.' Jesus requisitions this as His own sign in Matthew 12:40: 'So will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.' Three days in the fish. Three days in the grave. Jonah lived the rehearsal.
