BOOK DOSSIER: NAHUM
Testament: OT | Chapters: 3 | Status: 0% DECLASSIFIED
Three chapters of concentrated judgment against Nineveh — the sequel Jonah didn't want. A century after Nineveh repented under Jonah's preaching, the city reverted to full operational brutality: flaying captives, impaling prisoners, weaponizing terror. NAHUM delivers the verdict with some of the most vivid military poetry in Scripture. God is patient, but patience has a terminus. 'The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty.' Nineveh fell to the Babylonians in 612 BC, exactly as described. Repentance without persistence is just a temporary ceasefire.
Scarlet Thread
Nahum 1:15 — 'Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace!' Paul maps the parallel passage (Isaiah 52:7) onto gospel messengers in Romans 10:15. The good news announced over Nineveh's collapse is a shadow of the good news announced over sin's defeat. The feet on the mountains are still moving.
